Through four detailed case-studies, which examine the Norwegian Konungs skuggsjá, the Icelandic Njáls saga and Landnámabók, and the Gaelic text Baile Suthach Sith Emhna, the volume explores the linguistic, cultural, and political contacts that existed between Norse and Gaelic speakers in the High Middle Ages, and examines the impetus behind these texts, including oral tradition, transfer of written sources, and authorial adaption and invention. Crucially, these texts are not only examined as literary products of the thirteenth century, but also as repositories of older historical traditions, and the authors seek to explore these wider historical contexts, as well as analyse how and why historical and literary material was transmitted. The volume contains English translations of key extracts and also provides a detailed discussion of sources and methodologies to ensure that this milestone of scholarship is accessible to both students and subject-specialists.?This is a brilliant and genuinely ground-breaking book, representing a significant step forward in literary and historical analysis of the Norse-Gaelic interface?. An interdisciplinary group of scholars, from Art History, English, and French departments, has combined to explore the ways in which pictures in a book can have a 'social life'. Setting aside the traditional assumption that illuminated manuscripts were meant chiefly for the eyes of solitary reader-viewers, the essays in this anthology demonstrate that illuminations took on social dimension in many ways. They could cue internal dialogues with religious figures or family members; they could be described, explained, and/or viewed communally during public readings; and they could draw their viewers into joint celebration of core secular or religious values. As much as architectural monuments, contracts, and rituals, illuminations provide a way for us to map the multiple dimensions of medieval social life. | Aggiungi al Carrello |

This collection of essays brings together international scholars from a range of disciplines to explore aspects of playfulness in the later European Middle Ages. From manuscript to performance and from the domestic to the doctrinal, the exuberance and ambiguity of verbal and visual play is interrogated in order to decode layers of meaning in texts and artefacts.
These twelve papers celebrate the work of Elaine C. Block, whose dedicated study of misericords has, through countless articles and books, made the riches of this dizzying iconographic resource easily available to scholars for the first time. Her monumental Corpus on Medieval Misericords volumes will no doubt inform medieval scholars for generations to come, and those included in the present collection are both proud and grateful to be of the first generation to benefit from her work on this body of carvings which challengingly - and playfully - straddles thesometimes invisible line between the sacred and profane.

Through case studies of six houses in Pomerania and Neumark (Ko?bacz, Marienwalde, and Himmelstädt) and on the Scottish-English border (Melrose, Dundrennan, and Holm Cultram), the author traces the development of social networks around these monasteries within their own regions and across borders, and explores the importance of the international Cistercian networks for communities located in these politically sensitive areas. Very different socio-economic conditions in the regions under discussion resulted in quite different strategies of land accumulation by Cistercian monasteries in Scotland and Pomerania, which in turn had a lasting impact on their relationships with their neighbours. The author also examines the role of these abbeys in wider ecclesiastical politics and in relation to the key issues of the time: church reform and the expectations of the order?s lay patrons and benefactors. In the fourteenth century, all of the abbeys experienced war, violence, and long-term instability. Their responses to these threats and difficulties are significant for our understanding of monastic strategies in hostile environments. Above all, this study shows how a Cistercian model was adapted to fit the complex political, cultural, and ethnic contexts of the southern Baltic, Northern England, and Scotland.
Dr. Emilia Jamroziak is Senior Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Leeds and a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Her research focusses on the interactions between religious institutions, especially Cistercian monasteries and the laity from the early twelfth to the late fourteenth century. | Aggiungi al Carrello |

The essays in this important and fascinating collection explore
the genealogical literature of medieval Britain and France in
relation to issues of identity, the transmission of power, and
cultural, socio-political, and economic developments. By analyzing
the mechanics of cultural and political inheritance and the
processes of shaping a sense of identity and descent, the essays in
this volume direct the reader towards a complex understanding of
genealogical literature and its relationships with other genres,
one which will further debate and research in these areas. The
present collection presents an interdisciplinary approach to the
genealogical literature of the late-medieval period, and brings
together specialists in the fields of history, cultural history and
literature to raise questions of gender, genre, and theoretical
approaches. Broken Lines is also the first book-length
study of genealogical literature to date, an exciting intervention
into this emerging field of interest.

Parisian Confraternity Drama of the Fourteenth Century
is the first volume of studies devoted solely to the Miracles
de Nostre Dame par personnages. These anonymous plays, found
in a single luxury manuscript, comprise the only major corpus of
dramatic works in French that have survived from the fourteenth
century. They derive from a rich diversity of sources: narrative
miracle accounts, saints lives, epic chansons de
geste, vernacular romances, and history. Each play is preceded
by a richly detailed miniature, some two dozen include a sermon in
prose, and each includes at least one rondel to be sung by the
cortege accompanying the Virgin. They constitute both a collective
demonstration of the fervent late-medieval devotion to the Virgin,
and a substantial archive of contemporary insights into the issues
of power, authority, and influence that struggled for dominance in
fourteenth-century Paris. As this extraordinary collection has, in
its entirety, attracted little critical attention to date, this
volume will be of significant interest to scholars wishing to
explore the plays in their literary context, as well as those
interested in medieval drama, the Marian tradition, and the
role of confraternities in fourteenth-century French
culture.

The medieval English West Midlands has long been associated with
the production of vernacular texts, in Old and Middle English, and
with the making of several famous manuscripts. The aim of this
volume is to re-think assumptions about medieval literature and the
region in the light of new research in medieval book history. A
series of specially commissioned essays in 'manuscript geography'
examines the making and use of texts and books in relation to
cultural networks in the region and beyond. Included are case
studies of manuscripts of Worcester and the Worcester diocese from
the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries; investigations of
manuscript production in fourteenth-century Shropshire and its
wider regional links; and essays on textual cultures in
Warwickshire from the activities of the aristocrats and gentry of
the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries to the projects of later
antiquarians. Essays in the final section of the volume reflect on
the possibilities of large-scale, corpus-based research on medieval
manuscript books. Collectively the essays identify and explore some
of the investments of traditional regionalist accounts of
vernacular literary culture and model new theoretical and
methodological approaches.

Gautier de Coinci (c. 1177-1236) was a
Benedictine prior, a poet and composer, and the author of several
very popular religious works, including a large collection of
Miracles of the Virgin in French, which enjoyed a wide circulation
during the Middle Ages. Gautier drew on multiple Latin sources for
his work, embellishing and personalizing them as he adapted them to
his poetic design. Conceiving of his collection of miracles as a
complete work, Gautier carefully organized the tales into two
books, framing each with authorial exordia and lyrics
praising the Virgin. In addition to its obvious literary interest,
the subsequent manuscript tradition offers a remarkable panorama of
medieval manuscript production, in particular due to the
fascinating combination of text, music and illustration. Bringing
together a select group of scholars from multiple disciplines
(including art history, musicology, and literary studies), this
collection of essays explores complementary aspects of Gautier, his
works, and his manuscripts. The volume offers both breadth and
depth in its examination of Gautier de Coinci and his Miracles
de Nostre Dame. It promises to redefine Gautier studies through
its interdisciplinary consideration of the varied facets of his
work as it makes available to scholars and students the first
interdisciplinary examination of this key figure in medieval
vernacular religious culture.

This volume presents twenty essays by leading scholars of Old
Norse which bring into focus the nature of learned traditions
both oral and written in medieval Scandinavia and
the interpretation and re-interpretation of them over time.
Theoretical frameworks for understanding Old Norse literature is
the initial topic of the collection, which then moves on to present
recent work on Old Norse myth and society; current perspectives on
oral traditions in performance and text; and reflections on
medieval ideas about language, both vernacular and Latin. The
collection is rounded off by a section on prolonged traditions
the transformation of local and imported traditions into
new literary forms. Individual essays in the volume offer
significant primary research as well as reconsiderations of key
issues in scholarship, their subjects ranging widely, both
conceptually and chronologically, around the twin themes of
learning and understanding. Like the research of the volumes
honorand, Margaret Clunies Ross, Learning and Understanding in
the Old Norse World exemplifies the diversity and vigour of
current research in the field of Old Norse and draws together
philological, literary, historical and anthropological perspectives
on the subject.
